Art You Like FAC by Kyle Darnell

Post a link to an artist you like.  Please refrain from the Ninja Turtles (DaVinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Donatello), try to find someone more current. Write a little bit about what you like and how you would recomend them to others.

Here is mine.

Trenton Doyle Hancock

http://www.jamescohan.com/artists/trenton-doyle-hancock/

Trenton Doyle Hancock deals with issues ranging from current political climate, cool scenerery, to the deeper recesses of the artists' mind. His work is dynamic, playful, dark, and super weird. I would recommend him to anyone who enjoys an artist at play.

See, simple and to the point. These discussions will be posted every Monday and due every Sunday.

Tell me about your project FAC by Kyle Darnell

I find that sometimes, it is easier to formulate thoughts into works by writing them down. So tell me about your project by answering these questions:

What is it?

Why is it?

What size is it?

If you are working in a group, both partners will need to still post on this. I recommend doing it today in class so you have a concrete idea about what you are doing going forward.

Ketchup week FAC by Kyle Darnell

There is no new assignment this week. Instead I am giving you the opportunity to complete assignments you missed for half credit. Doesn't sound like much, but it is way better than a zero.

Now I am not going to dig through all the posts to find who caught up on what, when. You will need to comment on this with which ones you caught up on and I will double check it from there. If you don't write anything here, I will assume you didn't need it.

Write a Haiku FAC by Kyle Darnell

A creative person expresses themselves regardless of media. So far you have been creating visually, now I want you to express yourself phonically. Time to write and perform a haiku. Some of you know what haikus are, here is a quick run down.

It's about nature,

structure is 5,7,5

they can end quickly.

See how easy it is, I wrote a haiku about writing haikus. Just think about nature, don't rhyme, and stick to 5 syllables in the first line, 7 in the second, and 5 again in the third.

Be prepared to recite these to class at a the critique for Pen and Ink

Don't make it boring

Art You Don't Like FAC by Kyle Darnell

We all have prejudices about art. I personally have several (don't ever do scratchboard art in my class). This weeks assignment is to tell me what you don't like and why. Please provide a link to back up what you are talking about or so I have an idea of what they do. You can write about an art style, an artist, or a whole art period that you don't like. Please touch on why someone might like them though, I want to know the other side of the coin.

Here is an example:

http://www.damienhirst.com

Damien Hirst is terrible. Early on he was with the YBA (Young British Artists) and had actual credibility with his work. It was inventive, efficient and visually pleasing. Then he took a turn, I personally believe its when he became friends with the lead singer of U2, Bono. He started dressing and acting like Bono and as his celebrity grew his art declined. He reverted to the bare necessities of Post-Modern art, the grand scale. He started spending untold amounts of money to just kill and preserve animals in formaldehyde and said "Hey guys, look how great I am!"

The highest of his terribleness comes with the piece titled "For the Love of God" which is just just a human skull covered in diamonds. He started describing the media he works in as Money. Nobody needs that. Nobody needs Damien Hirst.

Art Movements FAC by Kyle Darnell

Write about an Art Movement you enjoy. Here is a quick reference to several  Be sure to include an artist from that time and a link.

Here is mine:

http://www.newworldencyclopedia.org/entry/Baroque_period

The Baroque period existed in the 1600s and its style consisted of dynamic figures, extreme dark to light shading called tennebrisim, and was considered the natural evolution of the High Renaissance. Some artists are Michelangelo Caravaggio, Rembrandt van Rijn, and Artemisia Gentileschi. It was succeeded by Rococo and Neo Classical art movments.

Art Techniques FAC by Kyle Darnell

There's a lot of different ways to make Art. I know some, and so do you. But I want to know what you don't know. Your assignment is to think of a technique or media you would like to learn. This can be charcoal drawing, watercolor, acrylic, bookbinding, collage, crackle paint. Honestly anything. And you will post a link to it online with a brief description of it. We won't get to most of them in class, but we might. Here is my example.

http://boingboing.net/2014/10/09/foundations-in-comic-book-art.html

I would like to learn Comic Book art. And not just how to arrange a book or write a story, but how to deal with certain angles, scene building, the importance of line. I think this would help the class because I think everyone has a story I'm sure they want to get out.

Due Sunday

Level Up by Kyle Darnell

What do you want to tell the freshman next year. Specifically what you wish you would've known coming in. Obviously stay away from negative stereotypes.

What do you think will help them not only in this class, but at Signature in general.

This is due May 14th so you have two weeks, but it is worth 20 points instead of 10.

Your Future FAC by Kyle Darnell

Simple, tell me what you plan on being after college and why. Never too early to start thinking about it. I don't expect it to be about art, but make sure to include a link to what you are talking about. And not everyone can be a Wolverine Trainer.

When I was a Freshman, I remember that I really wanted to be an Animator. I practiced outside of school constantly. Around Senior year I saw what the real world was like when I did a workshop for animation and ultimately decided not to pursue it. It wasn't about money or workload, it just wasn't what I was willing to commit myself to.

That being said, the average person from the Millennial generation forward will change their careers at least 4 times. So consider that when answering this. Its not about money, its not about what your parents/guardians want. Its about what you want.

Color Artist FAC by Kyle Darnell

This unit is focusing on color so what I need from you is some information about artists that are know for their use of color. Obviously a portrait painter will use color in their work, but is it the most important aspect of their work?

To keep it interesting, only artists post-WW2. I'm going to say that again, only artists after 1945. While were at it don't do yours about Jackson Pollock. Tired of that guy.

And a reminder about the format. Last name and class period. Post a link to the artist you researched then 2-3 sentences about that artist and what they did.

Sewing Techniques FAC by Kyle Darnell

For the upcoming project I am going to show you some sewing techniques. Unfortunately for you I am not going to show you all of them as there are dozens of different versions of stitches. Your assignment is to research a sewing technique that I don't cover in class. Post a link, talk a little bit about it, and practice it on your demo square that I give you in class.

There is a lot of different types of stitches that have different purposes so feel free to do more than one if you want.

To facilitate this type some variation of "Hand sewing technique" into your search browser and go from there.

Review an Art FAC by Kyle Darnell

This week we will be walking down to the Arts Council of SW IN Gallery to look at an exhibition of Senior Artwork. You will need to find one piece and critique it. Remember to use terms from the Color lecture and to leave constructive feedback. You know, what did they do right? What could they have done better.

Make sure to include the artist, the title of the piece, the medium, and information from their artist statement that helps you understand their work much better.

Heres the real kicker, its due Thursday because I don't want you to have to work during Spring Break (I'm so nice).

Change Art Forever FAC by Kyle Darnell

If you could time travel, which artist would you remove from the timestream and why? This would create a trickle down effect obviously and would change the course of art dramatically. Don't worry about time paradoxes and their main profession would have to be art. So removing Adolf Hitler because he was a failed artist before he went on to lead Germany would not be acceptable. I also want a good reason. You can't say "I don't like squiggly lines so thats why I am removing Cy Twombly."

Here is my example:

Darnell 7

I would get rid of Vincent Van Gogh. I thought he turned out to be a detriment to art with his disrespect for color and traditions. This caused many people to make art that was untrained and otherwise grotesque to enter my eyes all the time. Overall, his work was okay, its the people who emulated his work that I can't stand.

And a reminder, for the name on your assignment you will put your last name and your class number.

What did you learn? FAC by Kyle Darnell

What did you learn in Mr. Mauers portion of FAC? More specifically what is something you know now that you didn't before?

"I didn't learn anything" isn't acceptable and you will recieve a zero.

Make sure you put your last name and class period on yr comments. Again, these are assigned every monday and are due every sunday. Do not wait for me to tell you about your assignments.

Final Boss FAC by Kyle Darnell

This week you will be doing your own project. I don't care exactly what it is about as long as you put in the required amount of effort. For it you will answer this checklist to make your life easier. The checklist is due Friday so we can talk about it in class.

For your project answer these:

1. What is your theme (Love, loss, nachos)? What is it about (Are you focused in solving questions, working in techniques, experimenting)?

2. What materials will you use and in what media will you be working (Drawing, shading, sculpture, food, video, documentary)?

3. What size will you be working? (Give a rough idea and for video estimate the length)

This online answer is due by Friday in class so we can work over your idea and the project is due March 2nd. There will only be two in class days to work on this so don't dream too big.

This one isn't required and is worth 5 extra credit points.
